Bulbasaur
"Bulbasaur can be seen napping in bright sunlight. There is a seed on its back. By soaking up the sun's rays, the seed grows progressively larger."
First, I have to admit that my original starter in Red version back in '98/'99 was Charmander, not Bulbasaur. I think that was a result of the fact that I was 5 and thought I had to have a Charizard in that play through because that was the Pokemon on the box and game cartridge. So, it took a few years - I would say until I was about 9/10 - my love for Bulbasaur was born when one summer around that age my friends brought those Play by Play Bulbasaur plushies to daycamp. I was lovestruck and decided that I needed one! So, my mom and I searched eBay and stumbled upon a lot of 3 plush and thus my Bulbasaur collection was born. I had a few items (Sugimori pose Tomy, Hasbro keychain figure, etc.) before that, but from that point on I would try to get Bulbasaurs whenever I could. ~Twelve years later and here we are! I love the little guy Bulbasaur and of course his other evolutions. :D Collection Status: Actively collecting all items |

Bulbasaur Plush - 57
Shiny? Mascot Plush
Company: TOMY Year: 1997/8 This! I had been searching for this little (seriously, little) plush casually for about 2 years, and I finally got a hold of him in August 2014. I placed a bid on him and a matching Squirtle right before I was going out of the country for my birthday, and I came back to find I won them at the starting bid! This plush looks like a shiny plush, but it actually is just a color close to how it looked in the original GBC sprites. I love the variation in color though! |
Bell Plush (Suzunari Pokemon)
Company: Banpresto Year: 1996/1997 From Sunyshore's collecting guide: This series of plush was "made by Banpresto, from 1996 to 1997. The series had 3 sets, together totaling 49 Pokemon, and were released in UFO catcher machines. Due to it's early release date and distribution, they are highly sought after and rare... They average 3 inches in height, and come attached with a bell and cord, which is where they get their name." I love this series! This Bulbasaur is from Set 1 along with 16 other Pokemon. Every once in a while these plush pop up in this good of condition, and I try to limit myself to buying them then! This was the second bell plush I owned, with the first being a pikachu. This is one of my favorite items in my collection. Here is a photo of the set! (Photo from Sunyshore's collecting guide) |
Reversible Pokeball Plush
Company: TOMY Year: 1998 I don't know too much about these reversible plush other than they came in packaging kind of like the shape of the miniature pokedolls released in recent years. Mine did not come in the packaging, but that is okay! He's in pretty good condition, nonetheless. No matter how I try to position this guy, he always has one of his paws in the air like he's stepping or trying to wave. Cutie. |
Change to Masterball Plush
Company: Yujin? Year: ?? This plush is pretty similar to the one above in that it also changes into a pokeball, but this one is more round and ball-like in its bulbasaur form. It also changes into a Masterball. I am still unsure if Yujin is an off-shoot company of Tomy, but the tush tag is very similar to that of a Tomy plush. Man, the colors for Bulbasaur plush were pretty funky back in the day, yeah? |
Clip-on Plush
Company: Play-by-Play? Year: 1998 Every time I look around, I feel like I find a new type of clip-on or keychain plush. I purchased this gal off eBay with similar Gengar and Jigglypuff plush. She's in really good condition for being so small, old, and being in a random lot! I like noticing all of the different placements of the spots on the older plashes, and this one has two on her right legs, which is somewhat unusual, especially for such a little plush. |
Promo Mini Plush
Company: Berkshire Fashions Year: 1998 PokePlushProject identified this plush as a promotional item given out by Berkshire Fashions. I have no idea what all that entails, but it's not surprising at all because this plush was distributed during the early peak of the Pokemon craze. This was a magical time in which everyone and their dog had rights to making Pokemon toys and almost any store would carry Pokemon merchandise of some kind. |
...Hanging String Plush?
Company: Coming Soon Year: Coming Soon I am just gonna put this out there - I have no idea what to call this. ^u^" I also have no idea if this plush was meant to stand alone or if it was supposed to be a part of a plush bag a bulbasaur-escue color like I have seen before. Either way, I love this guy with his toothy grin and the color of the shiny material on his string! |
Shiny Material Mini Plush
Company: Applause Year: Coming Soon The Applause plush series, yeah! This series is known for making small plush for the original 151 with shiny material and giving attention to Pokemon who never really received plush attention after (I am looking at you Gastly and Spearow). When I was growing up, I would see my friends have plush like these, but for some reason I never owned any! As far as I know, the Applause line sold this Bulbasaur in one those individual Pokeballs but also in a "limited edition" set with Poliwag. I still see that set being sold at high prices at conventions. I personally did not own this plush until I joined the PKMNcollectors community in January 2013 when I purchased this plush along with her fellow Applause Charmander and Squirtle. |
Japanese Petit Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: Coming Soon I don't have much to say here other than for the size of this plush, he is absolutely adorable! The Petit plush line is becoming one of my favorites for its incredible detail and soft fabrics on adorable keychain plush. I mean, look at those toesies! When I first received this plush, I took off the hang tag and attached it to my bag for a time. Pokemon Center USA recently released a variation of this plush, and it'll be added here soon! |
Friends Plush (1st version)
Company: Bandai Year: Coming Soon Bandai friends plush are so cute for their slightly strange appearances, their tininess, and the individual boxes that they came in! Bulbasaur was lucky enough to get not just one, but TWO Friends plush! My high school boyfriend purchased this for me at a local convention in 2010. I don't want to pick favorites, but I think I slightly prefer this design to the second release of the Bulbasaur Friends plush. Weird. |
Friends Plush (2nd version)
Company: Bandai Year: Coming Soon This plush was the second Bulbasaur released in the Friends series. I can't help but be ecstatic that Bulbasaur received two releases! Crazy. I received this plush early on in my official collecting days to go along with the one I already had. This plush has the colors more associated with the colors of Bulbasaur nowadays but he's missing his typical pudginess! Still very cute though. |
Ball Keychain Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: Coming Soon For a while, I confused the stock image for this plush with the one for the standing MPC plush. When I really looked and realized they were separate plush, I got really excited. This one is smaller and more chibi-ish looking than the standing MPC plush. All I can really do with this plush is stare and blink at its cuteness! I had this guy on my bag for a while so I could appreciate the adorable-ness. |
Advanced Generation Ball Keychain Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: Coming Soon This guy just looks like he is up to something doesn't he? This is one of those UFO claw catcher plush released during the Advanced Generation era. I found mine with the tag and ball chain. It is pretty much the keychain version of a larger UFO plush that I also have (see further down the page). |
Walky Ball Keychain Plush (with charms!)
Company: Pokemon Center Year: Coming Soon Walky Plush!! This series is cute cute cute. As far as I know, this series included the Gen I - Gen IV starters, Pikachu, Eeevee, and Mew. They were designed to look like the sprites that walk behind your trainer in HGSS. This Bulbasaur was a plush I reeeally wanted for a while. This is the second Walky Bulbasaur that I won because the first got lost by my middleman! I only wanted this plush with the hang tag and charms, so I was happy to find a second one with all of its original attachments. |
Newer Keychain Plush
Company: TOMY (America) Year: Coming Soon I was bummed because this plush never appeared in any stores around me, so I had to purchase it online. Then, in January 2015, I finally saw one in a local Barnes and Noble. I didn't have any money on me to pick another one up, but it was nice to finally see one in stores. I do love this plush though because of his giant smile! |
Pokemon Time Keychain Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: Coming Soon !!!!!! Grail story !!!!!! So, I began looking for this plush in 2012 because I was absolutely stricken by this plush's Back then, I didn't have an income that allowed for expensive purchases, so I easily lost any auction I bid on. In the second half of 2014, a TON (okay, 4) of these plush kept popping up on yahoo! auctions. By this point in time I had lost ~7 auctions for these plush in the previous 2 years. Especially in those last few months, there were two that I almost won then people extended the auction and won at the last minute. So, when this one popped up, I said, "FORGET IT I AM GOING TO WIN THIS," put down an obscene amount of money, watched the time click down to zero as people kept bidding it higher to extend the auction, and VOILA no one was crazy enough to bid higher than me! I love this cutie with my whole heart and soul. It will never leave my collection, especially because it has all of its tags, its keychain, AND the little press here sticker! Yeah! Anywho, this Pokemon Time promotion originally had the Kanto starters as these types of teeny keychain plush and a variety of other items to go along with them. When you squeeze their bellies, their mouths open wide! :D |
Newer MPC Keychain Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: August 2014 I remember this plush changed ever so slightly in between the first image they released of it and its final design, but either way it is SO FREAKIN CUTE. AH. I flipped out when I saw they were releasing it! I preordered it (along with the Venusaur MPC) as soon as I could, and it took a little longer than normal to ship out to me, but oh well! Look at the way she's just flopped down and so happy! This plush brings me extreme happiness because of her softness and her unique pose/expression. I may try to get another one just so I can have one for display and one for use. I kind of wish the tag art was different from the first MPC plush, but the art is still cute! |
UFO MPC Keychain Plush: XY Series 1
Company: Banpresto Year: October 2013 Bulbasaur's first release in the My Pokemon Collection series was a success. This little guy is so detailed and spot-on in terms of accurate representations of Bulbasaur's current artwork. Consistent with this series of plush, the details are pretty intricate, the proportions are great, and the colors are just right! |
Standard Plush
Company: Hasbro Year: Coming Soon I am pretty sure I named this guy Eric back in the day. This is one of those Hasbro plush from the Advanced Generation days, before Jakks took over the Pokemon toy making in North America. I was still very much into Pokemon during this period of time and young enough to have my family members buy me toys for holidays, so I was able to collect a number of these items (you can see a lot of the plush in my Miscellaneous plush section, but most of the figures are not on this site). This was one of the earlier Bulbasaur plushies I received for the beginnings of my Bulbasaur collection! |
Shaky Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: January 26th, 2013 Cute! Cute! You pull one of the vines, and BAM the cute little guy shakes as the wines winds its way back to its original position. Bulbasaur was honored to be in a set with 4 other Pokemon (see below). I wanted to purchase all of them, but I ended up only buying the Bulbasaur and Dunsparce. Like some of my newer plush, I have the hang tag removed but still kept safely. I need to find it and take a picture because the art on it is adorable. These were some of the first plush I bought during my early days of "official collecting" in which I monitored PKMNCollectors closely to find out about upcoming releases! |
Patchwork Mascot Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: Late 2012 This promotion hit the PC during the seemingly endless storm of Eevees and caught me off guard! In late 2012, I was only casually monitoring Sunyshore and somewhat stalking pkmncollectors, so it is only now I can really appreciate how great this promotion was at that time. These patterns are incredible! I feel so fortunate to have had Bulbasaur made into this promotion. This must have been one of my earlier purchases from Sunyshore. I remember seeing these listed on Sunyshore and only having money for the mascot at the time. I regret not buying the bigger one, but I finally acquired one in late 2014! Again, I need to take pictures of the tag art because it is beautiful and sweet and adorable all at the same time. |
Fuzzy Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: 2012? Her name is Mio! :D I was happy to pick up this fuzzy, soft, wonderful plush from my preferred pickup person's sales in 2013. I am so happy to have found her at that time because they have become somewhat rarer by this point. This is probably one of my favorite Pokemon Center Bulbasaur plushes. You can't really tell from the picture, but she is totally adorable and extra squishy. Kind of strange the eyes are made of hard plastic though due to the furriness of the rest of the plush. |
Small Game Prize Plush
Company: Play by Play Year: 1999 This is one of those Play by Play plush that were game prizes at fairs, carnivals, theme parks, and other similar types of places/events. They ranged in size from anywhere around 4 inches tall to even over two feet tall! This is the smallest Play-by-Play I currently have and stands at about 4 inches. I found him at some point in 2013 at a thrift store. He didn't have his hang tag, but he has his tush tags. |
Canvas Plush
Company: Pokemon Center Year: November 19th, 2011 This series is right up my alley! The plush are made of these pastel-y colors to be representations of painting-themed artwork. The artwork features a painter and Smeargle painting portraits of Pokemon. I am hoping to get a hold of the charm set for the Kanto starters as they have artsy charms and the cute art from the tags! |
Terrycloth Beanie Plush
Company: TOMY Year: Coming Soon Tomy made Terrycloth beanie plush (usually called kuta kuta) in the late 90s and early 2000s of some Pokemon from the first and second generation. These are different from the ones released during the Hoenn era with the little buttons on their feet. Mine is a bit discolored, but I do not mind since these plush are pretty hard to come by. I broke down and purchased this guy off eBay in early 2014. Worthe money because he is so floopy and cute! |
Treatkeeper Plush
Company: Hasbro Year: Coming Soon These plush originally had candy inside them, accessible through a velcro opening on his belly. I didn't get this plush until nearly a decade and a half after they were released, so obviously mine did not come with candy. I vaguely remember seeing these plush being sold in the local Blockbuster, but I never ended up purchasing one. |
Late 90s Standard Beanie Plush
Company: Hasbro Year: Coming Soon Everyone who is old enough remembers these plush...the Hasbro plush sold everywhere during the late 90s Pokemon craze! Funny thing is, this is one of the few Hasbros I did not have as a kid. I had the Ivysaur, but I could never find the Bulbasaur. Instead, this was one of my first purchases off the PkmnCollectors community in early 2013. This plush is very similar to the Treatkeeper; she's just a little bigger and obviously doesn't have the velcro on the bottom to access the pouch. She also has a slightly more pointed spot on her forehead, which was the way I found the Treatkeeper plush later on. |
Bath Buddy Plush
Company: Coming Soon Year: Coming Soon This plush has seen a lot of use! This was one of the first Bulbasaur plush I ever received in that lot I mentioned at the beginning of the page. I believe I had named her...Erika? When I received this plush, I unfortunately cut off all of the tags and the little suction cup attachment because I wanted to be able to use it as an actual Bath Buddy! I didn't take many baths by this point, but I did still like having toys in the shower because I thought taking showers was pretty boring. lol This toy had a lot of exposure to water but is thankfully still in good condition. |
Plushplush
Company: Pokemon Center (Japan) Year: 2001 !!!! When I saw this for offer on PkmnCollectors in early? mid? 2014 I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I probably sounded pretty desperate, but I couldn't let this opportunity slip by. And now the baby is in my possession! I feel like I own a piece of Pokemon plush history. From Sunyshore, "Plush Plush are the forefathers of PokeDolls -- PokeDolls in a unique velvety soft fabric, with a different name, but the same pattern and artwork. As the years go by these PokeDoll ancestors become harder and harder to find, especially with their fragile fabric and tags in tact." I cannot believe I own this! Mint with tags and everything!! Technically, this plush should have been on my grail list, but I never thought I would own it, so it never even went on the list. Funny how things work out! |
Velboa Pokedoll
Company: Pokemon Center Year: 2004 This is Leif! This was first pokedoll release for Bulbasaur. He is made of the short velboa material and was pretty much the cutest thing I had seen at that time. My parents ordered him for me off of the original Pokemon Center website. He's a little worn because of the number of years I have had him. |
Velboa Pokedoll
Company: Pokemon Center Year: 2004 As far as I understand, there was not a differentiation between the pokedolls purchased from the Pokemon Center USA website and the ones found in the Japanese Pokemon Center stores. I wanted to confirm this by ordering a "Japanese" one, and the plush truly are very similar, right down to the exact same tush tag. However, this one is much newer-looking than my loved Bulbasaur pokedoll. I do wish to someday have one with a hang tag, though! |
10th Anniversary Minky Pokedoll
Company: Pokemon Center (Japan) Year: 2008 Minky!!! All of the starters were re-released in Japan for the Pokemon Center's 10th Anniversary since the first one had opened. This was different from Pokemon's 10th Anniversary. I was surprised at how minty this plush came when I bought it in 2014. The tag is pretty perfect. I love the design of it too! |
New Release Japanese Pokedoll
Company: Pokemon Center (Japan) Year: 2013 I was so happy Bulbasaur received so much attention during the early XY era! It was also so neat that the Pokemon Center decided to change the Pokedoll up a bit by varying its color. I am not sure why they decided to make Bulbasaur this pastel-y type color similar to the canvas, but it's cool that it wasn't just the same release as perhaps the 10th anniversary one. Also, cute new tag! |
New Release American Pokedoll
Company: Pokemon Center (USA) Year: 2014 After a month of searching in the city I normally live, I found this at my hometown's Walmart when I was visiting my parents in December 2014. Excitement! I had been seeing PKMCollectors had found Pokedolls (Pikachu, Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle) at their Walmarts, and I was hoping to find one near me so I wouldn't have to order one online. So woohoo! It was kind of a bummer that the hangtag was a bit crumpled, but what can ya do. |
Medium-Small Game Prize Plush
Company: Play by Play Year: Coming Soon This is Saura! She came along with the Bath Buddy and larger Play by Play in that lot that I obtained when I was a kid. She is Bulba's younger sister, and for some reason that was a very important fact to me as a kid. haha Anyway, she is still in pretty good condition considering how much I played with her. She will always be special and one of my favorites! |
Sassy UFO Catcher Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: I don't really know what else to call her other than "sassy." I mean look at that glorious eye shadow! I also love how her teeth stick pretty much straight out the sides of her mouth. I don't really know what Banpresto was thinking here, but this series of early Pokemon plush looks absolutely nutty. I completely adore them though. I am so happy with how minty this one is. She came with all of her tags, too! I have seen a few of these plush for sale without "eye shadow" and they look so much different. I am hoping the glue sticks on mine for years to come. |
Lottery Prize D Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: January 2013 Cute! Cute! Cute! From Otaku Mode: "Banpresto began its latest convenience store-centered popular ichiban lottery (known as Ichiban Kuji), “Ichiban Kuji the World of Cute Characters: Pokémon Best Wishes”. Tickets for the lottery are being sold for 500 yen a pop! The newest Ichiban Kuji series is themed after the TV anime Pokémon: Best Wishes and the prizes are adorable chibi versions of the popular characters. The prizes span five different classes with 15 varieties in total as well as a Last One prize." The prizes included figures of Lucario, Meowth, Snivy, Charizard, Eevee, Oshawott, Mew, Mewtwo, and Team Rocket. Plusshes included Pikachu, and smaller versions of the Kanto Starters. I was so happy that Bulbasaur was included in this mix! |
Kawaii Nuigurumi UFO Catcher Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: 2005 This is one of those adorable Banpresto plushies from the Kawaii series. They have completely soft and amazing material! And look at that sweet little face. :3 There's also a Venusaur from this line that is slightly largely due to Venusaur's flower. |
Taffeta UFO Catcher Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: 1998 These plush are very distinct in that they are made of this silky taffeta material and have large, hard plastic eyes. They seem similar to the bath buddy material, but they should probably not be used as such because they don't have any spongy type material inside. lol This line included other 1st gen popular Pokemon like Squirtle, Charmander, Mew, Meowth, and others like Dratini and Caterpie. |
PokeCen Standard Plush Company: Pokemon Center (Japan) Year: October 12, 2013 How fancy! For the release of XY, Bulbasaur received a new plush! Along with Bulbasaur, a number of XY dex Pokemon Center plushes were released, in addition to the life sized XY starters. How lucky for Bulbasaur and me to have him included in this bunch. Thank you, gen 6, for being awesome. Again, I am not really sure why the Pokemon Center is choosing to use these pastel-y colors, but I think they are quite pretty! |
May's Bulbasaur Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: Coming Soon I am so happy this plush exists. May's Bulbasaur is amazingly adorable because she is smaller than Ash's and also because she has hearts instead of spots on her forehead!! Now, she's in plush form with a little pot with a little plant! It's like she is using her magical grass powers to make her baby plant grow. |
Fuzzy Sitting UFO Catcher Plush
Company: Banpresto Year: Coming Soon This is Haru! He originally came with a hang tag, but I am not sure what I did with it. I am sure I have it around somewhere. I received him on February 5th, 2014, and he was a very exciting get because of his unique pose. I love how squishy and fuzzy this plush is. The material isn't the softest, but this is probably one of the cuter Bulbasaur plush. |
Fuzzy Standard Plush
Company: TOMY (Japan) Year: Coming Soon I couple years ago, I received one of these plush (the one on the left) in a lot from y!a, and the poor things were pretty worn/dirty. I did my best to clean him up, but it's nice to have a second one, MWT. Anywho, I have generally seen these plush in boxsets (see picture below), but, judging by the MWT one, they may have come individually as well. These are the original TOMY standard-sized plush! |
Fuzzy Plush with Drawstring Bag
Company: TOMY (Japan) Year: Coming Soon Yeah! Mine came with the drawstring bag! Yeah! These plush aren't particularly common and they don't usually come with the bag still attached. He didn't come with hang tag, but he has tush tag, bag, and is in excellent condition! I like that the plush has spots that are just a differently dyed color of fabric for an airbrushed look rather than the way the spots are usually placed. |

Medium Game Prize Plush
Company: Play by Play Year: 1999 Bulba (her name) is one of my all-time favorites. I brought her everywhere with me. She was acquired off eBay many years ago (with the help of my mom). I LOVED Bulbasaur and wanted one so badly, so my mom finally let me order one offline. I was so happy when she arrived! |
